Honoring Excellence in Volunteerism in Public Community Radio
On Saturday, August 23rd, WRLR 98.3 will be hosting the 5th Annual Geo Awards. This is a signature fundraiser for WRLR. We hope that you will consider attending our award program this year and support your local public community radio station. This event is held to honor volunteer members, businesses and organizations who have contributed their time, effort and financial support to keep the station operating, and making WRLR a unique and vibrant radio station. WRLR is recognized for its volunteerism spirit and is a previous Governor’s Home Town Award nominee. Individual tickets are available for $25 or a table of 8 for just $175—that’s one free ticket! We hope that you and your group can join us. The event will start at 5:00 p.m. and will be held at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center.

WRLR is the only low power FM station in the area serving local communities since 2005. WRLR has been connecting people to community organizations such as Chambers of Commerce, libraries, school districts, public safety, Metra rail and more. WRLR provides news/talk shows, and eclectic programming that makes WRLR unique. The station provides tours to local youth groups, like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to promote careers in broadcasting and communications fields. Our Training/Internship Program makes it quite attainable for local residents to be able to develop their own show concept and produce their own program on live radio. We often have several student Interns working at the station throughout the year. WRLR regularly participates in community events such as parades, festivals, high school sports, and secures interesting interviews with local athletes, leaders, government officials, and broadcasts local candidate forums and covers election results. One of WRLR’s missions is to showcase musical talent. Many producers bring in local talent for on-air interviews. Some end up performing at the Geo Awards which showcases local talent as well. The Geo Awards recognizes our volunteers, exceptional programming, and other good work they do in the community. There is also an ongoing Renovation Project that includes opening a second studio space to accommodate local bands for their on-air interviews and mini concerts, and rebuilding a
second level into a multi-purpose area for a training classroom/meeting room.
WRLR 98.3 is a public community radio station based in Round Lake Heights, IL that serves most of Lake County, focusing on the Greater Round Lake Area and Chain O’Lakes area. WRLR is an IRS 501 (c)(3) recognized not-for-profit organization that is operated by more than 80 volunteers. Since 2005, the station has grown and now offers over forty locally produced programs. Our potential listening audience is 250,000 in the areas we serve and includes a global audience with access to our station through live streaming on our website or via the Tune-IN® app.
