Round Lake Former Campfire Girl, 85, Heads Outdoors Again for
“Extreme” Senior Adventure
Former Campfire Girl Georgia Hansen, age 85, of Round Lake Beach has fond memories of camping as a child and after more than 60 years is getting the opportunity to camp again! Georgia, who lives at Oak Hill Supportive Living in Round Lake Beach, will join fellow resident Ron Jaworski, age 78, and about 30 other seniors from Chicago and the suburbs on an overnight camp trip tomorrow, August 19-20.
Organized by Pathway Senior Living, who manages Oak Hill Supportive Living, Camp VIVA! takes elder campers to Sunrise Lake Campground in Bartlett, IL, a handicapped accessible campground perfectly adapted for seniors’ needs. Campers can swim in the lake, fish off a dock, row a boat, hike in the woods, do archery, spend time with chickens, watch birds or make a craft. After a busy day, they cook their meals outdoors (Pocket Stew and Banana Boats are on the menu!) and relax singing songs around a campfire before retiring to their cots in the indoor lodge.
Pathway’s Camp VIVA! is the recipient of the International Council on Active Aging’s Innovator Award for pioneering programming for assisted living residents. “Camp VIVA! challenges the way we think about aging,” says Lynn Bunnell, Pathway’s Regional Life Enrichment Manager, who will also be camping, Noon on Tuesday, August 19, and stay through 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20.
