A message from the Round Lake Beach Police Department
It’s the day after Christmas and everyone has all kinds of boxes to get rid of. Here is a reminder: please break down your boxes and turn them inside out if you are going to be discarding them at the curb for garbage pickup. If you do as this photo shows, you are just telling the world what kind of expensive items are in your home, and to burglars, this is an invitation. Keep your home safe and don’t advertise that expensive new TV or anything else you just got for Christmas.
Don’t put empty gift boxes out until garbage day
Leaving empty, over-sized, big-ticket item boxes by the road can be an advertisement of what you have in your house—especially during the holidays. To help guard against this, tear down all of your big boxes or do not put them out until your trash pickup day.
If necessary, put extra empty boxes out the following week
After the gifts have been opened, don’t just put the empty boxes out on the curb with the trash for
pick-up—cut them up into smaller pieces that will easily fit in your trash bin and still allow the
lid to close completely. Burglars often use boxes left out with the post-holiday trash to go
“shopping” and select which houses to target. If it won’t all fit into the trash at once, spread it out
over two or even three weeks.
