NOTE: The 2015 race event will be held on Saturday, May 2nd
This is a major Cub Scout annual event and races begin at 9:00 am
The introduction of Soap Box Derby was contributed by Charlie Chaplin 100 years ago. In 1914 the motion picture “Kid Auto Races at Venice” depicts the “Little Tramp” at the bottom of a hill as engineless karts race down. Soap Box Derby’s didn’t catch on until the early 1930’s. For decades kids would race cars made from old Soap Boxes down hills.
Today, thru Cub Scout’s, kids between 6 and 11 have a chance to once again race the cars down hill. The Cub Scout’s call it “THE CUBMOBILE”. Using the same concept, they fashion cars by specifications using seat belt’s, wood and wheel’s.
The sloped track is lined on both sides with row’s of bails-of-hay. A wooden ramp starting point is at the top of the hill. Helmets are a requirement for safety.
The North East Illinois Council’s, North Star District of the Boy Scout’s of America will be holding the annual “CUBMOBILE” at Caboose park in Lake Villa, off of Fairfield and Rt 132 on May 3rd. This is a major Cub Scout annual event with hundreds of Cub Scout’s from all over the western part of Lake County coming to take part.
