Staley Da Bear tells kids to “Bear Down on Bullies”
Kids attending various summer camp programs being offered by the Round Lake Area Park District got a real treat Friday morning with a visit from Chicago Bears mascot “Staley Da Bear” and his handler, Hailie Meyer. Summer campers involved in Summer Trails School Age Day Camp, Trailblazers Special Rec. Camp, Theater Camp, Dance Camp, Teen Camp, and C.I.T. (Counselor-in-Training) Program were entertained for almost an hour as Hailie and Staley Da Bear talked about dealing with various types of bullying and how best to prevent and deal with it when it happens. There was a lot of group participation as Staley moved through the audience selecting summer campers to join him up in front to answer questions and show the best way to prevent bullying.
School Age Manager, Heidi Wodrich, who is in her 33rd summer working in the RLAPD Child Development Center Camp programs said the following:
“I invited Staley Da Bear to our summer camp program today because my goal is to create a safe, supportive & positive atmosphere in our programs for our participants. Bullying is something that we CAN teach children to manage and if we take the time to do this, we may just save one child from a childhood of pain. Growing up is tough, and interpersonal violence has some very negative outcomes for children who don’t learn the coping mechanisms to ward off verbal, physical or emotional attacks by other children. Staley teaches this in a fun and engaging fashion, and hopefully these very important messages will stick in the minds of everyone who attended!!”
Heidi also told me that she “has watched many children grow up and come back to work with us… and then bring THEIR children to us; our work is our legacy here, and anything that I can do to contribute to a positive outcome is my absolute pleasure!!!!”
Below are three videos showing (a) the summer campers begin to arrive, (b) Hailie and Staley’s presentation, (c) Staley giving out hundreds of High-Fives and Bear Hugs as the children are leaving. If you watch closely you may even see him bite a Green Bay hat off one of the kids as he is walking by.
