This years Chili AutumnFest was well attended and had more contestants vying for the chili-cook-off grand prize than in past years. With the weather in the 70’s during much of the day, visitors could enjoy the outdoor flea market as well as the hayrides, moonwalk, and car show. Then they could browse the dozens of craft tables setup inside with many great homemade goodies to choose from.
Later in the afternoon when all the chili contestants had their tables setup and chili at the proper temperature, most of the people migrated out to the patio or under the big tent donated by Hillcrest Nursing Center. Besides the chili sampling, the adults could try several different types of beer thanks to Scott Coyne from Four Coynes in Round Lake, along with his Budweiser distributor. For those who wanted a bit more than just a sample, there was draft beer available thanks to Docker’s North who donated the kegs. Our hometown musician, Marc Thompson from Scotty’s Hot Dogs, along with his partner from the Bar Stool Soldiers band performed at dusk.
With this being an election year and November fast approaching, there were numerous candidates at the event including a couple chili chefs. Those who weren’t competing in the contest helped pick the winning tickets for the meat and other raffles. About a half hour before the end of the event, Congressman Bob Dold stopped by and was asked to announce the chili cook-off winners. You will have to watch the video below to see who won. By that time the sun had disappeared and the patio lighting was only along the back wall so that part of the video appears to be in black & white due to poor lighting.
