Complaint Filed Over Recent Avon Township Newsletter

Public Funds Used For Questionable Political Mailing?

A formal complaint has been filed with the State Board of Elections regarding a political mailer recently sent out by members of the Avon Action members headed by Lisa Rusch, who are also officials of Avon Township, at the expense of Avon Township taxpayers.

The complaint, filed by Attorney Daniel Venturi on behalf of Avon Township Trustees William McNeill and Doug Raul Williams, claims that the mailing was produced, edited, printed, and mailed without their knowledge or consent. Besides filing a complaint with the State Board of Elections, the two complainants also filed paperwork with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office claiming that the mailer also violated Illinois Criminal (misconduct) Code 720 ILCS 5/33 and asking for expedited handling of the matter.

Avon Township resident, Jeanne Kearby, appeared at the Avon Township office with a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) form requesting numerous items of information regarding the March Newsletter as well as other information. When she arrived she was asked “What do you think of the newsletter?” at which she replied “You’ve got to know that this is why I am here.”

I was also told that prior to filing the papers each individual named has to be personally served notice of the State Board of Elections complaint.

On one occasion, Township Assessor Chris Ditton called the police while being served, saying he “felt threatened”. On another occasion, Township Clerk Elona Hamilton sent the police to the servers residence to tell the server not to come on her property again since she “felt threatened”.

Politics! Don’t you just love it? If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen!
