Demolition and construction that was supposed to get underway in late 2014 is finally moving along in the Mallard Creek Plaza. As you may recall, I reported back in March of last year that representatives from Meijer presented their plans to the Village of Round Lake Beach board members. After that meeting several members had stated that there were no “deal killers” in the proposal and expected things to move along.
Obtaining the necessary permitting and having Com Ed kill the power to the areas of the plaza that will be torn down took longer than expected. Original plans were to have the demolition begin late in 2014 but here it is February 2015 and the site has just been fenced off and an opening made in the rear of the vacant Walmart. There were about a half dozen remaining tenants that finally had their leases expire and either relocated or simply closed up shop. It would appear as though the scavengers have been in and removed anything salvageable. It probably won’t be much longer until we can expect to see the wrecking ball arrive to take down the buildings from the vacant Walmart to the vacant Omni food store.
The following video gives us one last look at the complex as they punched a hole big enough to drive a truck through in the rear.
