U.S. 10th Congressional District Candidates Host Forums for RLHS Students
The Round Lake High School Theater was filled with juniors and seniors to learn more about political science and the highly contested 10th Congressional District race between Congressman Brad Schneider and competitor Robert Dold during forums hosted by each of the candidates over the last week.
Students had an opportunity to ask 20 questions surrounding ongoing hot topics of each candidate during the forum. Topics included: their history and decision to serve in Congress, foreign policy, military, international relations, humanitarian efforts, militarization of police, gun laws, immigration, education, health care, marriage equality, tax reform, environmental issues, and support of small businesses.
U.S. Government teacher, Doug Barnshaw, was pleased that both candidates were available to meet with students. “We have never had an opportunity to expose our students to both candidates. We were so fortunate to hear the viewpoints of each candidate so that they can make an educated decision on who they would support based on their presentations. Students will assess the answers of each of the candidates and will then be asked to form and defend their selection during class.”
“Round Lake Area Schools CUSD #116 extends a sincere thank you to both candidates for taking time out of their busy campaign schedules to educate our young men and women”, stated Superintendent Constance Collins.
