On Tuesday, August 23rd, a massive, four hour fire at the Gurnee Holiday Inn destroyed the banquet hall areas, the attached kitchen, and bar. The entire northeast section was in flames and traffic along Grand Avenue was shut down as well as entrance and exit ramps to the Tri-State tollway. There were no guests in the rooms which were undamaged because the hotel was undergoing a major renovation. The cause of the fire was under investigation and it was surprising to see that the burnt shell was already bulldozed by late Wednesday afternoon
