On Wednesday, September 12, 2012, K9 Officer Highway was honored at a “Tree Dedication” ceremony at the Round Lake Police Department. K9 units from near and far as well as an outpouring of local residents came to pay their respects to Officer Highway. Most of us know what it’s like to lose one of our pets but it’s even worse to lose your workday partner who also has your back. Officer Michael Stevens will tell you more about his pet and partner Highway in the video below.
“Highway” became a member of the Round Lake Police Department in 2007. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of six years but continued to work as an active duty member of the Police Department before succumbing to his illness on Monday, August 20, 2012. He will be dearly missed by his handler, Officer Michael Stevens, as well as all who knew him
Reverend Lisle Kauffman was on hand to make the tree dedication as well as to bless other K9’s who were there with their handlers. The tree that was chosen was a crimson maple which will become a beautiful tree with crimson fall colors as it matures. I know, as I have one that I planted thirty years ago.
There was no sound system setup at the ceremony so the video has been enhanced digitally which also enhanced the wind and background noise.
