Lake County Rising @ Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center 2/12/15
The annual Lake County Rising event held on February 12, 2015 featured former Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon who entertained the audience with empowerment songs while playing her banjo. Simon is a lawyer, teacher, advocate against domestic abuse, mother of two daughters, and a lifetime of public service. The event was a free resource fair with many organizations on hand offering advice and assistance to those suffering from domestic abuse. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ozella Barnes of A Safe Place. Also making appearances were Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim, State Senator Melinda Bush, YWCA Executive Director Janice Bennett and students of Zion Central Middle School who performed Break the Chain.
There were so many volunteers involved in putting this years event together so I will skip the names for fear of leaving someone out (you know who you are).
I spoke with someone about turning on the stage lights so that the video would show up better but was told that the lights would be shining in the speaker’s faces and making it hard for them to read their scripts. Around the 10 minute mark in the video there is a lot of movement as I re-positioned my camera to get above people walking by in front of me. Enjoy!
