Megan McKenna will become Director of Strategy and Development and Lourdes Shanjani will be the new Executive Director
Serving the Lake County community since 2000, Mano a Mano Family Resource Center announces that
Executive Director Megan McKenna will now become the organization’s first Director of Strategy and
Development and that Program Manager Lourdes Shanjani will become the organization’s fourth Executive
Director, effective November 1, 2017.
McKenna’s contributions to Mano a Mano as the executive director have been invaluable. Under McKenna’s
leadership, the organizational budget has doubled in size and as such the visibility and impact of the
organization have expanded significantly. Mano a Mano is pleased to retain her skills, expertise, and passion to serve our community in this new capacity. McKenna will put her strengths to good use in developing and diversifying the organization’s revenue base, overseeing communications and marketing, and managing implementation of Mano a Mano’s strategic priorities.
Now assuming the role of executive director, Shanjani brings a strong mix of previous programmatic and management experience to this new position. An immigrant herself, Lourdes obtained her medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where she worked in clinical settings as a physician. As the Healthy Families Program Manager at Mano a Mano, she has overseen programmatic expansion across the county, advancement and improvement of program and data technologies, and the facilitation of access to health and human services for thousands of Lake County residents. She is well-respected and deeply involved in the community, a familiar face and compassionate advocate known to many throughout Lake County.
“We are really excited to enter this next chapter of the organization by adding this new position of Director of Strategy and Development, which will allow us to dedicate more time and strategic thought to sustainable
growth. I am thrilled to take on this new challenge and to continue contributing to the growth and impact of
Mano a Mano under Lourdes’s leadership,” McKenna said. About Shanjani, she added that “Lourdes is truly an inspiring leader, a committed community servant, and the right leader to step up to take the reins and lead us forward. We are truly pleased that the next executive director came from within the organization and that our internal talent and skills are strong.”
Upon McKenna’s decision to transition out of the executive director role, the Board of Directors convened a
selection committee to evaluate internal candidates among existing staff leadership. The Board Committee
found Shanjani’s vision, successful track record, and commitment to community service to be the right mix of qualities and experience to lead the organization into its next stage of growth and impact. The Board of
Directors voted unanimously to appoint Lourdes to be the new executive director at their September Board
Together with the Board of Directors, Mano a Mano’s executive team under Shanjani’s leadership seeks to
continue the strategic and sustainable growth the organization has seen over recent years. In the current
climate, Mano a Mano services and leadership in the community are more important than ever. As a
committed grassroots organization, Mano a Mano will continue to represent and elevate the voices of
immigrant families across Lake County in order to achieve the organization’s vision of integration and
opportunity for all.
Board President Jim Kinney commented, “Mano a Mano and our clients have benefited greatly from the
leadership provided by Megan McKenna and her team. We are so pleased that Megan will continue to be
deeply involved with Mano a Mano in her new role. We are equally pleased that we had talent developed
within the organization and can now pass the torch to Lourdes to continue leading Mano in our continued
