On tap this coming May are two first time boxing events in Libertyville
On day one, Friday, May 1st, at the Libertyville Sports Complex is the Badges vs Bad Guys event featuring Sheriff Mark Curran, Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz, Police Chief Eric Guenther along with a long list of other badge members and community leaders willing to trade leather for charity. (Note: Two great fights are expected to be Chief Guenther vs Jihn LaVere and Sean Haley vs Steve Kosmicki. They will be barn burners and have been training hard.)
The following two days will be the Junior Olympics Wisconsin and Illinois regional finals. The Junior Olympics event, which begins with semifinals on Saturday, May 2nd and continues on Sunday, May 3rd with the championship bouts for state champions ages 13-14 and 15-16. Only winners in the 15-16 age division advance to the national tournament. Fighters from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Pennsylvania will be competing. In all, more than 200 fighters are expected to gather at the Libertyville Sports Complex. “It will be the biggest boxing event ever in Lake County,” Coach Larry Lentz said. The Lake County Boxing Club will have many fighters compete, including a few who could challenge in the Junior Olympics portion of the competition – Mikey Ivanov, Sergio Calderon, Kara Cacioppo, Jordan Katz, Michael Carvajal and Cole Gebert just to name a few. Ivanov, a soon-to-be 10-year-old ———-student, was a Silver Medalist Junior Olympian last year. He’ll be fighting at 55 pounds. Katz, a 110 lb, 12 year old student in Glencoe and 2013 Gold Medalist is looking to add to his collection.
Kara Cacioppo, a 13-year-old —–student, will be making her first Junior Olympics appearance. She has been training the past 2 years at the Libertyville Sports Complex along with the others mentioned. Proceeds from the event will benefit the winners of Jr Olympics for travel expenses to Nationals and covering more than $20,000 of boxing gym dues for local at risk youth from Mundelein High School. Lentz’s boxing program has been an outlet for dozens of students over the past 7 years.
