Modern Roundabout to Open August 15
Lake Villa, IL – After a two month closure of the intersection of Monaville Road and Cedar Lake Road, a new modern roundabout will open making the intersection safer and more efficient. The new roundabout will open to traffic on Thursday afternoon, August 15.
The new single-lane roundabout replaces a four-way stop sign controlled intersection that experienced traffic delays during morning and afternoon rush hour traffic. Modern roundabout intersections improve traffic flow by allowing traffic to yield rather than come to a complete stop at intersections and they improve safety by reducing the potential for the most serious types of traffic crashes.
County Engineer Paula Trigg explained, “Roundabouts are community friendly because they reduce pollution and fuel consumption caused by traffic congestion. Modern roundabouts also increase the traffic capacity of intersections by 30-50% and reduce severe crashes, those with injuries, by 75%.”
The construction cost of this improvement was $1.6 million. Lake County funded the project using federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) funds (80%) and local Lake County transportation funding (20%).
This is the fourth roundabout intersection constructed by Lake County with others located at the intersections of Riverwoods Road at Everett Road in Lincolnshire, Millburn Road at Hunt Club Road in Old Mill Creek and Wadsworth Road at Hunt Club Road in Old Mill Creek. The first roundabout in Lake County at Riverwoods Road and Everett Road was opened to traffic in November of 2010.
“Modern roundabouts are now recognized across the country as safe and effective intersection improvements” said Diana O’Kelly, Chair of Lake County’s Public Works and Transportation Committee. “Lake County residents have responded in a very positive way to the roundabouts we have built so far and we will continue to consider them for future projects.”
