It didn’t take long Tuesday morning for workers to completely shut down East and Westbound traffic at the Canadian Central railroad crossing just West of the intersection of Route 83 and Rollins Road. Starting before 7:00 AM, a pair of workers from the barricade company started setting up barrels and barricades along Route 83 to block the Westbound turning lanes. Then they turned their attention to totally blocking off all Westbound traffic past the intersection at Rollins and Rt. 83.
Once that was complete they began the process of sealing off Eastbound traffic on Rollins Road which was now being directed South on Hainesville Road to either Shorewood or Washington Street, depending on vehicle weight (the signage sent drivers all the way to Washington St.) Once all the barricades were in place, including additional ones to halt pedestrian traffic, the pair moved back to seal off the remainder of Route 83 to prevent anyone from using the wrong lanes to navigate around the other barricades.
A quick drive to Shorewood and Hainesville showed that most drivers passed up the turn on Shorewood and went all the way to Washington Street (probably drivers who are not familiar with the area). Another jump over to Hook Drive showed very mild traffic at about 9:00 AM. Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning may encounter a completely different driving experience unless commuters continue to heed the warnings about the traffic detour.
