Are we moving from good to great or from bad to whatever she wants under the direction of Superintendent Collins at Round Lake Area Schools CUSD #116
[From a concerned parent’s perspective]
Uncertainty rings as clear in the community as the morning school bell does through the district’s hallways, and it is regarding the strength of the district’s Superintendent Dr. Constance Collins, her executive power and the decisions behind it, her cabinet and The Board of Education.
It is public knowledge that restructuring has brought much attention to the district. Last year parents and community members were drawn out to public forums numerous times to discuss what “must” be done to improve student achievement. This year no one seems to be talking about what has been done or whether the district is being successful with ALL of the plans approved by the board just over one year ago. Instead, we are learning of administrators leaving week after week. It gives one pause to see that there is no stability in administrative staff over the past four years. In fact, parents seem to be getting to know new principals and central office staff year after year. Why is the talent that brought about the change and put in the hard work to make the difference happen for our community leaving? We’ve heard the superintendent state in her opening school addresses annually that we are moving from Good to Great and that we have the right people on the bus. Yet, each year there is a parade of new administrators from principals to district administration. Is all the administration actually inept at their responsibilities suddenly, or is there something larger happening in our schools?
Recently the Superintendent’s contract has been extended to 2018 without notification to the public. Parents are consistently asked to give feedback on their schools, teachers, and principals. Yet, they’ve not be asked for any input on the leader responsible for educating all of the children and leading all staff. Has anyone noticed the number of staff that have been pushed out or left the district? Under this leadership there has been 100% turnover of principals in the last 4 years. Who will be accountable for our children and their success if the district is in fact hiring and firing an extremely high percentage of its administration and staff on a yearly basis? Most organizations would be concerned about the constant turnover when trying to make improvement. This community cannot afford four more years of instability which is the only thing that has been consistent since 2010.
Who is to govern the Superintendent, her cabinet and The Board of Education if the executive decisions they make are costing many hard working employees their livelihood, are not discussed with the public and administration or students have no say in the matter? Currently Superintendent Collins is one of the highest paid Superintendents in the state of Illinois. Where is the accountability of her team, the executive decisions they make, and solid proof as to why so much of the talent hired as elite individuals in their respective fields are suddenly terminated or their positions are entirely eliminated? Were they truly elite from the beginning or is the district administration shooting in the dark?
Parents, are you aware of what is going on at your child’s school and at the district’s Administrative Service Center? We are told to go to the district’s website for more information www.rlas-116.gov, however where do we go to find the truth? Parents and community members should start asking questions.
A very concerned citizen.
