This event will be held the SECOND Saturday of each month at Calvary Presbyterian Church
After months of planning and preparation the group of volunteers that initiated the Top Box Foods Express program for the Round Lake Area finally held their inaugural event on Saturday, September 13 at Calvary Presbyterian Church. The parking lot was already filling up fast by 8:30 AM when I arrived and the line stretched the full length of the front of the church.
As the frozen meat skids and produce boxes were being unloaded from the truck, the volunteers made final checks at their various stations before allowing the crowd to begin the purchasing process at 9:00. For the next two hours they were busy as bees, filling orders and helping transport boxes to waiting vehicles if assistance was needed. It appeared as though all of the planning paid off as things moved along at a quick pace. Someone mentioned an issue with certain types of debit cards being rejected but with the cost of the boxes being from $10 to $26, most people probably had that amount in cash with them. I’m sure that if it is an issue they will look into solving it before next months distribution. While viewing the video below, there seemed to be a slight delay when they needed to get another skid of frozen meat out of the refrigerated truck but that only took a few extra minutes. The weather was a little chilly but that also kept the frozen food boxes cool once they were removed from the truck and placed under insulated blankets.
Volunteers came from many sources and their time was much appreciated. Being able to use the parking lot and portions of Calvary Presbyterian Church was also greatly appreciated, especially as the group looks forward to the Fall and Winter months ahead which may require more indoor usage of the church. For those who did not participate on Saturday and are wondering what it was all about, the video below squeezes two and a half hours into 15 minutes to show exactly what to expect if you stop by in the future. There are NO income restrictions and it is open to everybody with all forms of payments being accepted including LINK and SNAP cards.
