VIDEO: Walsh-Duckworth Debate at the Meadows Club

I attended the Joe Walsh – Tammy Duckworth debate this past Tuesday, October 9th at the Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. The debate was scheduled to start at 7:00 PM and I arrived around 5:45 to get a spot on the press platform to shoot a video. I was glad that I did since once the debate started there wasn’t much room for those who wanted to setup their tripods. In fact the beginning of my video is quite shaky as I moved my tripod to make a bit more room for another videographer who needed to squeeze in.

Although the debate was quite interesting to sit through, the debate going on outside the entrance prior to the start was even more interesting. When I first arrived there were only about a half dozen Walsh supporters standing around with signs. Once I scoped out the inside press area I went back outside to find quite a loud boisterous group of Duckworth supporters gathered on the other side of the main entrance. Eventually some Walsh supporters who were veterans walked over and got into some heated face-to-face clashes with a few of the Duckworth supporters who may also have been veterans. I shot a little footage of that encounter as the police arrived with their mars lights on to calm the situation down. I also took some footage inside of the lobby area that had two portable bars set up at each end. A reporter from the Daily Herald tried to paint a picture that the boisterous supporters were “alcohol fueled” which was so far from the truth. The footage I have shows maybe one person holding a plastic cup. The rest were simply mingling around waiting for the event to start.

I have footage of almost all of the debate until my new camera’s battery ran out of juice (a larger backup still hasn’t arrived from eBay). Since Obamacare is such a big issue I pulled out the section where they debated that hot button. It also includes Walsh’s wager of $2,500 with Duckworth that a well known steakhouse owner, that they had both met with, would state that Obamacare would end up hurting his business and that he would be opposed to it. Duckworth would not accept the wager. If she had, she would have lost because the owner issued a written statement a few days afterwards and numerous press inquiries, that he did in fact not support it.
